Jacqueline Suowari creates large-format, figurative works on paper, using ballpoint pens, ink, fabric cuttings, gold leaf and acrylic as she spends countless hours bringing the figures to life. Her drawings seem so real that they are reminiscent of photographs, from which the emotions and perceptions of the figures are transferred directly to the viewer. Jacqueline is a young, modern woman who is deeply inspired and closely connected to Nigerian cultural history. She transports this connection into her work through symbols of ancient art from pre colonial Nigeria, significant motifs and commemorative clothing. I am thrilled to be working with Jacqueline as I feel that we have a special bond as two women, despite the thousands of kilometers between us. Our partnership reflects the extraordinary and special ways that art connects continents and whole cultures.
